Needy Heart

Updated: Dec 19, 2024

Have you ever been told or been afraid that you are clingy in relationships? Our hearts are needy. And that's okay! We crave deep, meaningful connections. It's in our DNA and it's the same DNA of a deep, meaningful God. We also long to be understood. There have been times in my life in which I have felt like an alien - alone in my thoughts and desires. Jesus said in John 17:16 that we (his disciples) are in the world but not of the world. 1st Peter 2:11 says that we are temporary residents and foreigners. We are just passing through this Earth on the way to our eternal place with our Savior.

When I travel, I may feel excited, and I may marvel at new things. But I can never feel quite at home. In the same way, we will never feel quite at home in the world. Our home is with Jesus. Which is why it's crucial to make time to spend time in His presence. That's where we are home. That's the place where it's okay to be clingy. And that's the place where we are fully understood. Only Your maker can understand every emotion that you feel. For many years, when I felt misunderstood, I suffered through a mixture of agonizing emotions that appeared to have no outlet. I didn't know what to do with them. An amazing spiritual mentor taught me that all I must do when I feel this way is start a conversation with God, tell Him what I am feeling and ask Him what He wants me to have in its place. I could exchange confusing emotions for freedom, a sound mind, courage, love, faith, power, wholeness, contentment, strength, protection, and soul nourishment in an instant. Instantly healed. All I had to do was ask. The starting point of hope is understanding the love of God. He died so you and I could live an abundant life.
